Forest gardens and syntropic agroforestry

Forest gardens are a broad term for multiple canopy layers of mainly perennial plants woven together to create productive and resilient gardens, similar to orchards with more layers of interest. These are designed to be low in inputs and maintenance, and high in productivity. They are unusual spaces which often have a restful feel to them.

Forest gardens have been around for a long time in the UK, but syntropic agroforestry is relatively new to the northern hemisphere. It is a highly productive and dynamic relation to forest gardening which utilises sunlight and pioneer species with a chop and drop system to make plants grow extraordinarily fast, with little to no irrigation.
